Common Questions about door and window replacement & My Safe Home Program

What are hurricane compliant doors and windows?

Hurricane-compliant windows and doors are impact-resistant and specially designed to withstand the extreme forces of hurricanes and severe storms. They are constructed with laminated safety glass which has two or more panes bonded with a tough interlayer so if the glass breaks, the interlayer holds the shards in place, which maintains the building's structural envelope and prevents dangerous debris from entering. Keeping the envelope sealed is the critical priority in hurricane construction because when a window or door fails during a hurricane, wind pressure rushes inside and can literally lift the roof off a house.

Do I need a permit or inspection to install new windows or doors in Florida?

Yes. A building permit is required for window replacement, door replacement, and garage door replacement in Brevard County and all of Florida. After the work is complete, a final inspection is required. At Home Wreckers, we handle all of the permits and inspections for you on all projects.

Key standards:
Hurricane-compliant windows and doors are tested by firing a 9-lb 2×4 lumber at 50 ft/s at the glass, simulating debris in a Category 5 storm.

They must meet the following requirements:

  • ASTM E1886 / E1996 — standard test methods for wind-borne debris impact
  • Florida Building Code (FBC) approval
  • Miami-Dade NOA (Notice of Acceptance) — the gold standard, one of the strictest in the world. We are in a non-HVHZ area so we don’t require NOA here, only FPA.
